Nigeria could do without radical secessionists and the violence they stir in the minds of the gullible.
I first came across Kanu through his hate speeches. It was the era when Kanu issued truckload of bitterness from his pirate radio station all day long.
When he is not pouring invective and vitriol on a particular tribe or individual, he's calling on his followers to burn down the land of his birth to the ground.
A few days ago, Kanu was at it again. This time, he was declaring that no election will hold in his southeast region in 2019.
Kanu also declared that there'll be no governorship election in Anambra State.
Anambra heads to the ballot to elect a new Governor on November 18.
"If federal government does not agree with us on a date for a referendum", Kanu warned, "there'll be no elections in the southeast. We are starting with Anambra come November this year. There'll be no governorship election in Anambra State".
The man wasn't done.
"In 2019, the whole of Biafra land will not vote for any president. There'll be no Senator, there will be no House of Reps, there'll be no House of Assembly and there'll be no Councillorship elections in Biafra land if the federal government fails to call for a referendum".
Kanu added that, "Nigerian government should build as many prisons as possible to jail all Biafrans because there is no going back and we are ready to go to prisons..."
Well, at this rate, the eccentric Kanu may well have his wish.
One of the conditions Justice Binta Nyako of the federal high court in Abuja handed out before granting Kanu bail in April was that the leader of the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB) shouldn't address a crowd of more than 10 persons.
Kanu was also asked not to grant interviews or organise rallies.
He's done all of those. The man has trampled on and violated almost all of his bail conditions without let or hinderance.
The problem with Kanu is that he doesn't just love being in the news, he considers himself the news.
He's an attention seeker, who'll journey to the ends of the earth to buy himself a dime worth of attention. And his mouth is often the vehicle for his tantrums.
Which is why I suspect, Aso Rock avoids mentioning the man by name.
Biafra is a conversation that has to be had. At some point, we've got to discuss the intricate details of a referendum.
Subjects like fiscal federalism and restructuring can't be avoided any longer. We've got to confront these hot potato subjects headlong because to pretend like they don't matter will be playing the Ostrich.
However, as we go about nationhood and discussing the terms of our existence, it would help if one demagogue who's been issuing hate speeches from the comfort of his Dad's compound, doesn't inflame passions any further.
This nation is sitting astride fault-lines as it were. We could do without radical secessionists and the violence they stir in the minds of the gullible.
Declaring that there will be no elections in the southeast until Biafra is realised is typical of Kanu, given his propensity for hate speeches and bluster.
But that doesn't mean he shouldn't be cautioned and taught how to shut his trap by those who have his ears.
For a man who's facing charges bordering on treasonable felony, it is a tad mind numbing that Kanu has learnt absolutely nothing since he was picked up by law enforcement in a hotel apartment in 2015.
