Agency arrests Chinese, Nigerian for smuggling chemicals
NAFDAC officials and security operatives, besieged Chum's furniture company in Ogun state where the illegal substances were found and impounded.
Reports revealed that after the Ports Inspection Directorate of NAFDAC got a tip off about the smuggled substance, Urea Formaldehyde Resin powder, the agency had swung into action to arrest Chum and his clearing agent, Ohia.
However, Chum ran out of luck after the NAFDAC officials and security operatives, besieged his furniture company in Ogun state where the illegal substances were found and impounded.
Punch Newspapers further reported that the unregistered and controlled chemical was smuggled into the country in two containers through the Lagos Sea Port.
While Chum and Ohia were reported to have been handed over to the Lagos state police command for prosecution, the Chinese insisted he was innocent and merely requested for the substance to make use as a glue in his furniture company.
IN his words, “This glue is from China. Everyone can buy it. I am not an importer. I gave this job to an agent. The agent did not tell me anything. NAFDAC people came to look for the agent. After arresting him, they arrested me too. You can come to my factory and see what I use the substances for. It is to hold furniture together.”
The acting Director-General of NAFDAC, Yetunde Oni however, said the substance was impounded because its importation is controlled and can be use to make explosives.
