The minister of state of petroleum, Ibe Kachikwu also confirmed the appointment of Barkindo as the new OPEC Secretary-General, and congratulated him on his Twitter page.
Barkindo also served as the acting secretary-general of OPEC in 2006, and was NNPC GMD from 2009-2010.
An excerpt of OPEC's official statement obtained from its website reads: “The Conference decided to appoint Mr. Mohammed Sanusi Barkindo, from Nigeria, as Secretary General of the Organization, with effect from 1st August 2016, for a period of three years. In doing so, the Conference expressed its appreciation to HE Abdalla Salem El-Badri for his leadership of the Secretariat and the Organization during his tenure as Secretary General.”

Barkindo’s appointment was decided at the 169th Meeting of the organisation, which was held in Vienna, Austria, on Thursday, June 2, 2016.
Diezani Alison Mdueke was the first female President of OPEC. She was elected at the 166th OPEC ordinary meeting in Vienna on November 27, 2014.
