Banks in Apapa are reportedly shutting down and evacuating their staff after two banks were set on fire.

Burnt Sterling Bank building in Apapa

According to reports, the mob set the bank on fire after the management failed to release the security officer who was hiding inside the bank to them.

The Sterling Bank building on Wharf Road was also set ablaze, leading to banks in the area shutting down and evacuating their staff.

Reports about what really happened are unclear at the time of filing the story, but trouble had reportedly started around 10am over the indiscriminate parking of trailers by the drivers.

After the police officer reportedly killed the drivers, he was chased by the mob into Diamond Bank.

The mob of over a hundred, mostly colleagues of the dead drivers, reportedly carried disused tires to set the bank on fire, targeting several computer sets, units of air conditioners, and ATM counters.

There have been conflicting reports about the number of people killed by the policeman with eyewitnesses claiming three drivers, while others have said it was only one driver that was killed.

Security operatives from the Rapid Response Squad, anti-riot squad and Area B command, as well as the Nigerian Navy Ship BEECEOFT have been deployed to the area to put an end to the crisis.
