Ambassador Purwanto was summoned on Thursday, April 30, 2015, over the executions which took place on Tuesday, 28.

The 4 Nigerians executed in Indonesia.

The Federal Government has summoned the Indonesian Ambassador to Nigeria, Harry Purwanto to protest the execution of four Nigerians in Indonesia.

Nigeria condemned Indonesia’s decision to kill its citizens despite several appeals not to go ahead with it.

This sentiment was conveyed to Purwanto by the Undersecretary, Economic and Consular Affairs Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bokunolu Onemola, in Abuja.

Purwanto however said that the men had to be executed in accordance with Indonesian law.

“There was nothing we could do for those four Nigerians because every legal process was completed and only then did the government of Indonesia implement the decision of the court,” he said.

Onemola also used the opportunity to urge Nigerians to desist from trafficking drugs.

“One message I would like to convey to my compatriots is that they should know that drug offences in Indonesia attract capital punishment and our appeal is that they should avoid going to these countries to commit these offences because we cannot change their laws. They are a sovereign nation, we can only appeal to them, but our citizens should know this and desist from drug trafficking,” he said.

The four Nigerians who were executed in Indonesia were identified as Jamiu Owolabi Abashin, 50, Martin Anderson, 50, Okwudili Oyatanze, 41, and Sylvester Obiekwe Nwolise, 47.
