Unemployed environmentalists decry government’s neglect

Speaking further, Opeta said in accordance to the World Health Organisation, WHO standard, one environmental health officer should be assigned to 8,000 people.

The Governor of Lagos state, Akinwunmi Ambode, and the Corps Marshal and Chief Executive of the FRSC, Boboye Oyeyemi.

A group of unemployed Environmental Health Officers, EHO, has disclosed that the neglect of its members by the Lagos State Government has resulted to shortage of health workers in the state.

During a recent rally held in Lagos, the group’s spokesperson, Opeta Joel maintained that with the increase in Lagos state population, is a reason to employ more of its members, who are qualified to international standard.

In a chat with Vanguard, Opeta said, “When you look at the population of Lagos which is over 20 million, Lagos State is expected to have over 2,500 EHO but what we have today is less than 500 and as a result of this, so many aspects that need urgent attention are being neglected.”

‘We want government to look into recruiting more people in order to increase manpower so that we can meet the WHO standard and meet the goals for which this profession was actually created and also begin to shield ourselves from diseases, epidemics and disasters,’ he said.
