American woman abducted by unknown gunmen

Phyllis Sortor, who works as a missionary for the Free Methodist Church in the state, was reportedly kidnapped in Emiworo village at around 10:00 am on Monday, February 23.

An American citizen resident in Kogi State has been abducted by unknown gunmen.

Phyllis Sortor, who works as a missionary for the Free Methodist Church in the state, was reportedly kidnapped in Emiworo village at around 10:00 am on Monday, February 23.

“She was whisked away at around 10:00 am (0900 GMT) Monday,” Police spokesman, Sola Collins Adebayo told AFP.

"We are hopeful of finding her. Our suspicion is that she was picked up for ransom,” Adebayo added.

The spokesman also stated that Reverend Sortor is about 65-70 years of age.

The Bishop of the church, David Kendall responded to the abduction via the church’s website saying:

“The U.S. Embassy has been notified, and the State Department and the FBI are working with local authorities to find and rescue her."

The US Embassy in Nigeria is yet to issue an official response to the incident.
