NLC says electricity tariff increase bad omen to economy

He said members of the congress in the state have endorsed the proposed nationwide peaceful protest by consumers against the hike and called for a reversal of the hike.

Tariff reversal will put Nigeria at risk of a nation wide blackout

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Kebbi state on Monday said the electricity tariff increase approved by the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) was a bad omen to the economy.

Alhaji Murtala Adamu, the NLC Chairman in the state, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Birnin Kebbi.

Adamu said that any increase in tariff would compound the economic recession already being felt due to drop in the price of oil.

He said the tariff increase had negated the principles of due process especially as electricity supply had not stabilised and called on NERC to reverse it until power supply improved.

He said the NLC was in full support of the anti-corruption war and investigations by the Federal Government on corrupt leaders.

According to him, the fight against the looters of the nation’s economy is in order.

While calling on the civil servants to be committed and dedicated to their duties, he said the NLC would not relent in the promotion of welfare of workers.
