Government to employ 5, 000 street vanguards

According to him, this will go a long way in curbing lawlessness among them.

Borno Govt. to employ 5, 000 street vanguards

The BornoStateEnvironmental Protection Agency (BOESPA) has said that it will employ 5,000 civilian JTF as street vanguards to enhance sanitation activities in Maiduguri.

The Sole Coordinator of the agency, Alhaji Nasiru Surundi, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Maiduguri on Friday.

Surundi said the gesture was part of the efforts to ensure healthy, safe and clean environment as well as to create employment opportunities for the teeming youths.

"We are constantly challenged by the negative attitude of residents toward environmental issues, to discourage indiscriminate littering of the streets and open defecation, among other things.

"That is why we thought it wise to employ some of our youths as street vanguards to assist us in cleaning shops, markets, streets and government offices.

"Some of the youths have also been doing stop and search as part of the measures to check Boko Haram insurgents and the state government is paying them monthly.

"Many of them are also doing the jobs without pay and because we don't want to leave them idle, we will employ them as our sanitation vanguards and pay them N10, 000 monthly.’’
