IDPs accuse camp managers of selling donated items

The IDPs claimed that the donated items were either sold to vendors outside the camp or to the displaced persons themselves

Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the New Kuchingworo camp, Abuja have reportedly accused the management of the facility of selling items donated to them by concerned Nigerians.

The IDPs claimed that the donated items were either sold to vendors outside the camp or to the displaced persons themselves, Vanguard reports.

“It is true that most of the donations made to us are not getting to us. They sell some of the gift items to people,” one IDP told Vanguard on Sunday, November 1, 2015.

“What the leaders do is that they sell some to the food items to food sellers and those that care to buy. Some IDPs too, sell theirs after collecting their share when they need money,” the source added.

Managers of Nigeria’s IDP camps have been plagued with allegations of embezzlement and maltreatment in recent times.

The IDPs are victims of the Boko Haram insurgency which has left many dead and several more homeless.
