The Customs boss arrived the National Assembly complex wearing a white native attire and a white cap.
The Senate on Tuesday, March 7, passed a unanimous resolution summoning Ali over the planned seizure of vehicles that have not paid duty.
But in a letter by an assistant comptroller general of Customs to the Senate on Tuesday, March 14, Ali shunned the invitation saying the date for the meeting coincided with a ‘fortnightly meeting of the NCS management.’
Reacting to Ali’s letter, Senator James Manager said the Senate is an arm of government adding that the management meeting is not beyond the control of the comptroller general.
"The man asked someone else to write and sign a letter. He is saying that the Senate should defer because of a small meeting that is not beyond his control. This is insult of the highest order. I think the integrity of the Senate is being tested.
"The comptroller general of customs must appear in uniform tomorrow. Anything short of that is not acceptable," he added.
The Senate thereafter mandated Ali to appear before it in uniform at 10:30am on Wednesday.
But Ali responded to the summon saying he was bereaved.
The Senate on Wednesday threatened to issue a warrant to arrest Ali, if he does not appear before it today.
The Senate is currently in an executive session.
It is not yet clear if Ali will be allowed to brief the Senate without his uniform.
