Nasarawa State government pledges more support to Police in fighting crime

Al-Makura made the pledge when he received the newly-posted Commissioner of Police to the state, Mr Mohammed Uba-Kura, at the Government House, Lafia.

Al-Makura made the pledge when he received the newly-posted Commissioner of Police to the state, Mr Mohammed Uba-Kura, at the Government House, Lafia.

He said that the collaboration between the state government, the Police and other security agencies had helped to contain violent crises in the past and reduced crime in the state.

He said the recent donation of a new State Command Headquarters to the police was in appreciation of its doggedness and commitment in fighting crime and securing lives and property in the state.

The governor expressed optimism that the pedigree of the new police commissioner would be exploited to build on the successes recorded by his predecessors in sustaining the peace in the state.

He said that the inauguration of community-based conflict resolution committees in local government areas by government was a way of complementing Police effort at resolving crises at community level.

“This mechanism, which has yielded great results, was aimed at minimising pressure on the Police and allowing the force to focus mainly on crime fighting and very serious security challenge,” the governor said.

The Uba-Kura assured the state government that the Police command under his watch would not relent to deliver on its constitutional mandate of securing lives and property in the state.

He appealed to the state government to strengthen existing vigilance groups and encourage communities to establish such groups where none existed.

He said membership of such groups should be devoid of partisan or religious inclinations, adding that government; either at the state or local level, should support the groups with funds.

The commissioner commended the state government for the donation of the state Police command headquarters building  and solicited further support with regards to provision of logistics toward ensuring effective policing.
