Obaseki, who was represented by his deputy, Mr Philip Shaibu, gave the advise at the 2rd Founder’s Day ceremony of the university with the theme: “Restructuring the Nigeria tertiary education system to addressing the 21 Century funding challenges’’.

He urged the management, staff and students, to be committed to the highest standards of discipline, hard work, character and service to enhance the common good of all.

The governor said that the society out there needed brilliant students for employment, adding that they should see themselves as future leaders, rather than being a disappointment to their parents and the society at large.

Obaseki charged the management of the institution and the students to set targets in profound discoveries and break new grounds in learning.

Earlier, the Acting Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Emmanuel Aluyor, said that the vision of the university is to become a centre of excellence in quality teaching, research, innovation and community development.

Aluyor said that the institution’s management would continue to keep to its mandate of no strike by both staff and students, adding that management, in a proactive manner, has put in place proper channels of communication in resolving issues.

He said that the university was working towards producing graduates that are self-reliant and employers of labour.

The guest speaker of the ceremony, the minister for education, Alhaji Adamu Adamu, who was represented by Prof. Jacob Ehiorobo, said that in view of the current economic challenges, Nigerians must explore other means to fund its educational system.
