Doctors should “go and play football” – Nunoo Mensah

The Ghana Medical Association has been on strike for about two weeks now after their negotiations on conditions of service with government hit a deadlock.

According to the head of human security, Brigadier General Joseph Nunoo-Mensah, doctors should have chosen football if they wanted money.

The Ghana Medical Association has been on strike for about two weeks now after their negotiations on conditions of service with government hit a deadlock and have vowed to resign en masse Friday, August 14, if government fails to yield to their demands.

President Mahama yesterday described the strike as illegal and beyond comprehension. “They should go back to work, government will negotiate in good faith" and "not under duress", he stated.

Pleas by other officials to for doctors to call of the strike and go back to the negotiation table has yielded no results.

Speaking on Starr FM’s Morning Starr on Thursday, Brigadier General Nunoo-Mensah observed that the striking doctors have chosen money over their profession.“These professions are a calling. When I joined the army to die to save Ghana, it wasn’t because of the money...so when you want to be a doctor, you must survive but money shouldn’t be sole [reason] of you being a doctor. Otherwise, you go and play football, you go to China and join Asamoah Gyan and make money,” the former National Security Adviser said.
