The federal government has been urged to take urgent action to tackle the growing issue of malnutrition and hunger in Nigeria.
Dr Ogenna Walter Ekwubiri, founder of the Motivating African Youths Initiative, made this appeal while speaking at an event marking this year's World Food Day (WFD).
Ekwubiri highlighted the devastating impact of food and water shortages across communities, especially on vulnerable groups like children and women.
In her address to the media, Ekwubiri referenced a UNICEF report from June 2024, which revealed that about 11 million Nigerian children are currently experiencing severe food poverty.
"One in every three children under five is affected," the CEO of Havillah Walter Company remarked, underscoring the serious nature of the crisis.
She also noted that the figures are alarming for about 31 million children in this age group nationwide. Dr Ekwubiri pointed out that the lack of clean water compounds the problem.
Cases in Makoko
"In communities like Makoko, where water is abundant yet clean water and food remain scarce, the challenges of daily survival are real," she said.
As part of her humanitarian outreach, Ekwubiri visited the Makoko community in Lagos State, distributing food items to residents struggling to access essentials daily.
Ekwubiri called on the government, organisations, and individuals to collaborate in fighting malnutrition.
"This is a day to remind ourselves that no one should be left behind in the fight against hunger," she emphasised.
This year's WFD theme, "Water is Life, Water is Food. Leave No One Behind," highlights the crucial link between access to water and food security.
Ekwubiri urged all stakeholders to take action to ensure equitable access to these vital resources.
