NLC commends Senate for halting implementation

The labour leader said effecting the increase would have been paying more for darkness as the power situation had remained abysmal across the country.

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has commendable the Senate for ordering the suspension of the implementation of the increase in electricity tariff announced recently.

Mr Jerry Nnubia, Chairman of the NLC in Anambra, made the commendation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Awka on Wednesday.

NAN reports that the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) approved 40 per cent increase in tariff by electricity Distribution Companies effective Feb. 1.

Nnubia said the decision of the Senate was an indication that they were in tune with yearnings of the Nigerian masses, adding that it was in the best interest of Nigerians.

"The decision of the Senate was laudable, commendable and timely, they have acted in the best interest of the people.

"Labour has demonstrated in the nationwide protest that the increase was uncalled for.

"The distribution companies should do their job first by making power available,’’ he said.

On the non-compliance to the new price of N86.5 for Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) by marketers in Anambra, the labour leader said it was another drain through which the members of the public are fleeced.

Nnubia called on the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) to step up enforcement to ensure that the new approved price was adhered to.
