British nurse recovers, leaves hospital

Pauline Cafferkey had been receiving treatment at the isolation unit of London's Royal Free Hospital.

A British nurse who contracted Ebola while working in Sierra Leone has recovered and been discharged from the hospital.

Pauline Cafferkey had been receiving treatment at the isolation unit of London's Royal Free Hospital.

The nurse, who worked with the “Save the Children” charity in Sierra Leone said upon her release from hospital that she was “happy to be alive” and  was “looking forward to going home.”

“I want to say a big thank you to the staff who treated me - they were amazing,” she added.

Cafferkey returned to the UK on December 28, 2014 and was admitted to the Royal Free Hospital, Britain's main centre for Ebola cases, on December 30.

The nurse, whose situation was marked as critical at a point, was the first person to have been diagnosed with Ebola on British soil.
