The death toll from the worst Ebola outbreak in history has now risen to 7,842, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Monday, December 29.

The spread of the disease has declined in Liberia, which accounts for most of the casualties, but is still spreading rapidly in Sierra Leone.

According to the WHO, 315 new confirmed cases were reported within a week in Sierra Leone with a 115 of these recorded in the capital, Freetown.

Sierra Leone has since overtaken Liberia as the country with the most cases of the disease and the nation is instituting stringent measures, including district lockdowns and a cancellation of holiday celebrations, to curb the spread of the disease.

Meanwhile, a case of Ebola has been confirmed in Glasgow, Scotland after a health worker who had been attending to patients in Sierra Leone was diagnosed with the disease.
