We won’t call off the strike – Doctors tell NLC

A senior member of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Dr. Hardi Abdullah has stated that it will be “suicidal” for any executive of the union to ask members to call of their three-week old strike as directed by the National Labour Commission (NLC).

According to him, a decision concerning their return to duty can only be made at their general assembly meeting.

“It is impossible to just call off the strike now as the NLC is demanding. It will be suicidal to make that decision and any executive who makes that call can be impeached. The decision to call it off will be decided upon at the next general assembly meeting,” he said on Starr FM’s on Thursday.

A statement by the NLC said it met the employer represented by the ministry of health, employment and labour relations, the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) and the Ghana Health Service on the other hand. The NLC also met the GMA and directed as follows:

Members of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) are on a strike to demand improvement and codification of their conditions of service.

Talks between government and the striking doctors have stalled on several occasions. While the doctors say government has not been negotiating with them in good faith, government has said it cannot negotiate under duress.
