Presidency reaffirms commitment to reducing current unemployment level in Nigeria

Taking the lead in championing concerted efforts at supporting the present administration’s vision of job creation and employment of capable Nigerians for national economic rebirth, the professional institute with the inauguration of its committee on Management of National Unemployment Challenge (MNUC), commissioned a study into the major indicators for the growing national unemployment rate.

Charged with the responsibility of understudying the situation and proffering solutions to same, the MNUC in its key findings, proffers sustainable recommendations to the national challenge both in the short and medium to long term.

In the past year, CIPM, has in addition to its extensive research, committedly engaged with key stakeholders across the private and public sectors including the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment and driving up to the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for an ultimate goal of the adoption of its recommendations into policy.

The extensive study which delved into the nature, root causes and incidences of unemployment in Nigeria also outlined clear strategies to be undertaken by Government and other stakeholders in addressing the Nigeria’s unemployment challenge from the root causes and in arresting the trend going forward. Including necessary safeguards for ensuring alignment and compliance, which are key to avoiding recurrence of high unemployment and/or stagflation.

Projecting the importance and value of its findings and the associated recommendations to the level of full acceptance implementation, the Governing Council of the Institute recently met with His Excellency, the Acting President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Professor, Yemi Osinbajo at the presidential Villa in Abuja for the presentation of its comprehensive report.

Presenting to the Acting President, the Leadership of the Institute represented by President and Chairman of the Governing Council CIPM Nigeria, Mr Anthony Arabome, FCIPM, stressed the institute’s intention for collaboration and support to the Federal Government in providing implementable and sustainable solutions to the growing unemployment challenge in the country. “Our intent is to collaborate with and support the Federal Government in providing implementable and sustainable solutions to the unemployment challenge in the country” said Arabome.

Mr Arabome continued that the institute’s short and medium to long term recommendations are based on a holistic approach covering Federal Government policies on the economy, education, immigration and expatriate quota, managed labour market, entrepreneurial skills development, rural industrialisation for cottage enterprises and targeted import substitution for high technology industrialization.

On receiving the report, His Excellency the Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo thanked the institute and its leadership stating that “it is indeed heart-warming to have a reputable body of professionals take out much time and effort in undertaking a study for the future of our country and that of our young people”. The Acting President then assured the institute of a meaningful collaboration in evidently reducing national unemployment level to a barest minimum.

In closing the visit, Mr. Arabome reaffirmed the institute’s continued support to the Federal Government’s efforts in effectively managing the nation’s human capital, particularly minimizing the current scourge in national unemployment challenge.
