The appointments were confirmed today, October 21, 2015, at an emergency Council of State meeting held by Buhari.
Others who were appointed as INEC commissioners are:
- Dr Anthonia Taiye Okoosi (Kogi)- North-Central
- Alhaji Baba Shettima Arfo (Borno)- North-East
- Dr Mohammed Mustafa (Edo)- South-South
- Mr Soyebi Adedeji Solomon (Ogun)- South-West
Buhari had been severely criticized for the appointment of Zakari, who has been described by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the President's "in-law".
Prominent lawyer, Femi Falana had also warned, on Sunday, October 18, that elections conducted by INEC as it was could be declared illegal by a court due to the fact that it had only two national commissioners and was therefore not properly constituted.
