Buhari President appoints new INEC Chairman

Yakubu replaces Amina Zakari who is now the INEC Commissioner representing the North-West.

  • Published:

President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed Professor Mahmood Yakubu as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Yakubu replaces Amina Zakari who is now the INEC Commissioner representing the North-West.

The appointments were confirmed today, October 21, 2015, at an emergency Council of State meeting held by Buhari.

Others who were appointed as INEC commissioners are:

  • Dr Anthonia Taiye Okoosi (Kogi)- North-Central

  • Alhaji Baba Shettima Arfo (Borno)- North-East

  • Dr Mohammed Mustafa (Edo)- South-South

  • Mr Soyebi Adedeji Solomon (Ogun)- South-West

Buhari had been severely criticized for the appointment of Zakari, who has been described by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the President's "in-law".

Prominent lawyer, Femi Falana had also warned, on Sunday, October 18, that elections conducted by INEC as it was could be declared illegal by a court due to the fact that it had only two national commissioners and was therefore not properly constituted.
