Expert cautions orthopaedic patients against patronising traditional bonesetters

According to him, the feeling of neglect makes patients to withdraw from the hospital and resort to traditional bonesetters for treatment. "Come to the hospital for proper diagnosis and treatment of your orthopaedic problem instead of rushing to the traditional bonesetters," he urged.

Dr Ayodele Orinolade, a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Traumatologist, Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTCH), Ile-Ife, has advised patients with orthopaedic problems to stop patronising traditional bonesetters.

Orimolade gave the advice during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday, in Ile-Ife, Osun. The surgeon said that traditional bonesetters are handicapped in making accurate diagnosis, as they don't have x-ray machines and other health equipment but make their treatment on assumption.He also advised patients coming to the hospital to always allow medical personnel to conduct necessary investigations instead of believing that nothing was being done while been investigated.

The traumatologist attributed the high cost of medical care to the cost of maintaining the hospital facilities.He called on the Federal Government to develop more orthopaedic centres to cater for patients with special needs. The consultant further enjoined patients with damaged spinal cord injury to visit orthopaedic hospitals instead of travelling abroad or visiting a traditional bonesetter for medical advice
