President Buhari, in a statement, extolled the monarch’s extraordinary and committed leadership to his people over a period of seven decades.
The statement was issued by the president’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, in Abuja.
The President noted the deceased’s exceptional stewardship which saw Thailand emerged as one of South East Asia’s leading economies.
He said that the “highly revered monarch will be long remembered for his towering role and dedication to improving the lives and aspirations of the Thai people’’.
Buhari acknowledged that under the monarch’s reign, Thailand witnessed remarkable transformation in every sphere of life, including making agriculture the bedrock of economic development.
He, therefore, expressed the hope that Thailand and all those who mourned King Adulyadej, would continue to honour his legacy of selfless service and commitment to human dignity.
He prayed almighty God to grant his soul eternal rest and comfort his family, well-wishers and the Thai people in this period of loss and national mourning.
Late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who died on Thursday, at the age of 88, was the world’s longest-reigning monarch, sparking a national outpouring of grief.
The Thai government has declared a year-long official mourning period while a Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn has been named as successor.
