A statement issued on behalf of the family by Dr. Babajide Osotimehin said the Executive Director of the United Nations Populations Fund (UNFPA) died on Sunday.
The family said burial arrangements would be announced later.
The 68-year-old was a former Provost of the College of Medicine at the University of Ibadan, as well as former head of Nigeria’s National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA).
Before his death, he was reappointed as the Executive Director of UNFPA in 2014 after his first four-year term as director ended.
Reacting to the sad news on Twitter, the Kaduna state Ministry of Budget (@KDMobp) tweeted, "We commiserate with the family of former Nigerian Minister of Health & Head of UNFPA, Babatunde Osotimehin, a friend of KDSG who died today."
Osotimehin was married, leaving behind five children and three grandchildren.
