Condemn Obanikoro’s ministerial confirmation

Following the confirmation of Musiliu Obanikoro’s ministerial confirmation on Wednesday at the floor of the senate, APC senators have expressed disappointment at the result saying Obanikoro’s issue was clearly overruled.

The APC lawmakers organized a press briefing after staging a walk out in protest against the confirmation when Obanikoro’s ministerial confirmation was announced.

“The Senate President has decided to override the members of the senate. When a matter is in court, the senate should not deliberate on it,” the APC senate leader, George Akume said.

If in the past, the Senate refused to confirm some Senators due to different objections, then why is Obanikoro different.

“We want Nigerians to take note that the country is being deceived by the Senate,” Akume added.

In the same vein, Magnus Abe, representing Rivers South-East Senatorial District, said they are opposing the confirmation because Obanikoro breached the oath of office.

While Olubunmi Adetumbi, representing the Ekiti State Senatorial District, said the confirmation was biased and not the best interest of Nigerians.

Contrarily, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, Enyinnaya Abaribe, said the argument of the APC senators is not valid because Musiliu Obanikoro has not been found guilty of any offence by a court of law, stating that what they have against him are mere allegations.

“There are allegations against Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, but in our law and the constitution of Nigeria, anything that is a mere allegation that is not a court decision is nothing but a mere allegation.

“The laws of Nigeria is very clear; you are innocent until proven guilty, so that is what played out on the floor of the Senate,” Abaribe said.
