Governor urges Buhari to declare June 12 Democracy Day

Ambode said this would serve to immortalize the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola who was believed to have won the annulled June 12, 1993 Presidential election.

Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to declare June 12 as Nigeria’s official Democracy Day.

Ambode said this would serve to immortalize the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola who was believed to have won the annulled June 12, 1993 Presidential election.

The governor made the call on Friday, June 12, 2015, while speaking at a rally held on the Lagos Television grounds in Ikeja.

“June 12 personifies our desire to liberate ourselves and take charge of our destiny. June 12 symbolises the patriotism of all Nigerians as the election fired up hope in the mind of the people,” Ambode said.

“Lagos has continued to be the hub of democratic ideas and we will continue to expand the frontiers of democratic governance and freedom of our people. June 12 should be declared the real democracy day. The outcome of this year’s election proved that June 12 has been fruitful. We owe it a duty to immortalise the memory of our heroes,” he added.

Ambode had earlier declared the day a public holiday in the state and the governors of Ogun, Oyo and Osun followed suit.
