The Chairman, Lagos State Chapter of NURTW, Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede, made the plea in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Lagos.

``Many of our members cannot read or interpret the signs on tyres to know when they were produced and when they will expire. So, they need more enlightenment.

``How many of the drivers can read and interpret production and expiration dates on tyres? Our members need to know this to run away from purchasing expired tyres in the markets.

``However, we have to continue to inform our members on the dangers inherent in using expired tyres as a way of collaborating with the FRSC but the corps needs to simplify it.

``Tyres are very important to the safety of our lives and that of our passengers, so, the role of government in this matter is very vital,’’ Agbede said.

The NURTW boss urged the government to block every avenue for the proliferation of substandard tyres in the markets for the safety of Nigerians.

Agbede added: ``While we are not against the enforcement embarked upon by FRSC on expired tyres, it should not be money making venture.

``The officers should enforce the regulation with a human face’’.
