The terrorist group has carried out a series of suicide bombings and raids this year with over 60 people killed in attacks launched in August alone.
The attack is the second notable attack by terrorists since the return of President Muhammadu Buhari to the country on Saturday, August 19, 103 days after he left for London to resume treatment for an undisclosed illness.
While speaking during his national address on Monday, August 21, the president spoke largely about insecurity in the country, especially the resurgence of Boko Haram, promising to deal with the group.
He said, "I am charging the Security Agencies not to let the successes achieved in the last 18 months be a sign to relax.
"Terrorists and criminals must be fought and destroyed relentlessly so that the majority of us can live in peace and safety.
"Therefore we are going to reinforce and reinvigorate the fight not only against; elements of Boko Haram which are attempting a new series of attacks on soft targets, kidnappings, farmers versus herdsmen clashes; in addition to ethnic violence fuelled by political mischief makers. We shall tackle them all."
As a show of intent, the president met with the security council on Tuesday, August 22, with Boko Haram being one of the biggest issues discussed during the meeting.
