30 million Nigerians get National Identity Number

The Lagos Regional Coordinator of NIMC, Mr Kayode Adegoke, gave the figure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Sunday.

Adegoke also said that the commission  had spread its registration centres across the 20 LGAs and the 37 local council developmental areas of  Lagos State to ensure that residents were captured.

“The Director-General, Mr Aliyu Aziz, said that NIMC has issued NIN to about 30 million Nigerians while more than 100,000 printed cards are awaiting collection.

“Our mandate in this agency is to ensure that every Nigerian is issued a personal identification number as it is done in other countries of the world.

” For this reason, the agency has spread its registration centres across all the local governments of Lagos State to bring them nearer to residents,” he said.

Adegoke called on  members of the public to enrol for NIN.

The coordinator also advised residents whose cards were ready to go and  collect them.

He said that NIMC was committed  to developing the identity eco-system in Nigeria

and harmonise all identity-related databases in the country.

The official said that NIMC was partnering with organisations such as banks to make NIN a mandatory  requirement for transactions.

“In NIMC, we will also ask you to provide us with your BVN (Bank Verification Number) before we can register and issue your NIN.

“You can see that the harmonisation is ongoing,” the state coordinator said.
