Reps give IGP 24-hours to produce document

The House of Representatives has given Ibrahim Idris, the inspector general of Police 24 hours to produce relevant documents relating to the 2017 budget.

The House also summoned the IGP to explain why the residence of Danjuma Goje, senator representing Gombe central was raided on the evening of Thursday April 20, 2017.

The resolutions were sequel to a motion sponsored by a Gombe state lawmaker, Abubakar Yunusa Ahmad.

Speaking at plenary on Wednesday, April 26, Yunusa said the police carted away documents, including reports of the 2017 appropriation bill which was scheduled to be laid before both chambers of the National Assembly today.

"The way and manner security agents, in the course of their duties, invade the privacy of Nigerians citizens with impunity and without regard to law and due process, thus portraying the federal government as lawless to discerning observers and commentators, both at home and abroad," he said.

"The gestapo manner in which the security agents invade private residences, in the course of carrying out their duties is causing apprehension in the minds of citizens and unless steps are taken to halt these extra legal actions, the nation descends into a near fascist state," he added.

In his contribution, Herman Hembe, lawmaker from Benue, said measures should be put in place to avoid a repeat of such incident.

"The raid is completely despicable. It is condemnable in its entirety. We should not encourage this any longer and avoid its reoccurrence," he said.

The house adopted the motion after it was put to a voice vote by Speaker Yakubu Dogara.
