Sacked DIC workers want a place at GRA

This follows government's decision to implement a single window system with West Blue Limited from September 1.

Destination Inspection Companies (DICs) have pleaded with president Mahama to consider an effective transitional period for them when their contract expires at the end of the month.

This follows government decision to allow West Blue limited take over the  Single Window Project at the ports  from September 1.

Carl Sowah, Chairman of collective union of DICs said  they want to be absorbed into the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA). He argued that the over 500 workers whose contracts have been terminate can compliment workers at West Blue and GRA to execute the Single Window project.

The DIC, the chairman said, "has brought a significant growth of total government revenue from imports from about US1 billion per annum in 2000 to in excess of US 7.5 billion per annum in 2013, an annualised total revenue growth rate of about 17 percent per annum since 2000. Collections of the Customs Division of the GRA have increased by about 250 percent in nominal terms over the period 2009 and 2013, and from 2.1 billion in 2009 to 5.1 billion cedis in 2013, an average annual compound rate of about 19 percent for the same period”.

Pulse.com.gh sighted a letter written to employees of the Destination Inspection Companies notifying them that their contracts with the companies have ended.

The letter signed by the human resource manager of the company said "as you may be aware our contract with the government of Ghana comes to an end on 31st August 2015. This also means that your employment with the company formally comes to an end at that time too."

Over 540 workers in the five DICs will lose their jobs by the end of this month.
