Company hires ex- US Attorney General to challenge NCC fine

Telecommunication giant, MTN has hired a former US Attorney General, Eric Holder to help with its law suit against the Nigerian Communication Commission which has imposed a fine of N1.04tn on the company for failing to disconnect unregistered subscribers.

The Financial Times said former US Attorney General, Eric Holder, pleaded with Nigerian officials last month on behalf of the telecoms company.

MTN was served the N1.04tn ($5.2bn) penalty in October last year, prompting weeks of appeal that led to a 25 per cent reduction to N674bn ($3.9bn).

According to Punch Newspaper, Holder served at the US Justice Department from 2009 to 2015 and was one of President Barack Obama’s longest-serving cabinet members, returned to the law firm, Covington & Burling, where he was previously a partner from 2001 to 2009.
