De-flooding programme had 9.5 million beneficiaries

The Lagos state government says over 9.5 million residents have been beneficiaries of the governments de-flooding programme since commencement.

Mr Tunji Bello, the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment, made this known at the 2015 ministerial press briefing by ministry in celebrating Governor Fashola’s eight years in office.

The commissioner said that the ministry planned to capitalize on the achievements recorded in the previous year which sheds light on why the programme began last December.

“The ministry’s ultimate goal is the realisation of a cleaner, sustainable and liveable Lagos. The ministry has assiduously pursued this goal with unwavering zeal in the last eight years.

“Similarly, our resolve is also the attainment of a flood-free state through efficient management and preservation of storm water through the deployment of innovative approach and strategies.” He said.

Bello said the scheme was kept alive through strategies such as the pre-rain programme, the mid-rain programme, and the post-rain programme. He also recalled that back in 2011, the state was faced with very serious flood challenges which led to loss of homes and lives.
