Nigeria losing N5bn daily to road congestion – ANLCA

This was disclosed by ANLCA National Publicity Secretary, Kayode Farinto, during a recent press conference.

Traffic jam in Apapa, Lagos State

The traffic congestion in Apapa, Lagos is costing Nigeria N5 billion daily, according to the Association of Nigerian Licenced Customs Agents (ANLCA).

This was disclosed by ANLCA National Publicity Secretary, Kayode Farinto, during a recent press conference.

Farinto also warned that the association would be forced to go on strike if the situation is not urgently addressed.

“The federal government is not exempted in these daily record of losses as revenues generated by some government agencies have begun to drop at an estimate of over N5 billion daily,” he said.

“This is as a result of the traffic gridlock. The traffic gridlock along Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, Wharf Road, Marine Bridge, Ijora is so unbearable that it has become a nightmare coming and going out of Apapa,” he added.

“All these above mentioned entering routes into Apapa have become den for armed robbers and hideouts for them to perpetrate their evil acts. Some stakeholders have at various times been dispossessed of their valuables and cash at gun points on a daily basis,” Farinto said.

The ANLCA spokesman also blamed the traffic situation on the “uncivilised and uncultured attitude” of the tanker drivers.

Governor Babatunde Fashola has given the drivers a 48-hour deadline to remove their vehicles from the road.
