Prodigy, member of prominent hip-hop group dies at 42

It is believed that the deceased rapper died from complications of his sickle cell anaemia condition.

The MC, who reportedly performed over the weekend at the "Art of Rap" tour in Las Vegas alongside the likes of KRS One, Ghostface Killah, Onyx died of unknown causes according to TMZ.

News reports confirmed that the rapper had suffered from various health conditions, most notably sickle cell, in recent years.

A publicist to Mobb Deep confirmed the news of his death in a statement to XXL News, while also stating that the cause of his demise is yet to be known.

“It is with extreme sadness and disbelief that we confirm the death of our dear friend Albert Johnson, better known to millions of fans as Prodigy of legendary NY rap duo Mobb Deep.

"Prodigy was hospitalized a few days ago in Vegas after a Mobb Deep performance for complications caused by a sickle cell anemia crisis.

"As most of his fans know, Prodigy battled the disease since birth.

"The exact causes of death have yet to be determined. We would like to thank everyone for respecting the family’s privacy at this time,” the statement reads.

The passing of the rapper comes as a great shock to the hip-hop community and has prompted comments from heavy weights in the rap game such as Nas who mourned him in an Instagram post that reads, "QB RIP King P. Prodigy 4 Ever."

Prodigy alongside group member, Havoc, represented one of the notable rap gangs that rocked the early 90s with popular songs such as 'Shook ones' and 'Quiet storm'.
