Say Yes to the Dress has been a TLC staple for years, and now it’s making history: Over the weekend, the hit show featured its first transgender bride.

On Saturday night's episode, New Jersey-based hairdresser Gabrielle Gibson spoke about growing up as Charles Horace Gibson V, adding, “my father’s only son is now the baby daughter of the family.” She says her family has been very supportive of her and her journey.

Gabrielle is marrying her fiancé Jaden, a transgender man. “I never thought that I would ever find a man who openly wants to be with me, and share a life with me,” Gabrielle told People, expressing gratitude for Jaden. “Because as a trans woman, we tend to be treated more as a sexual desire, or treated as an object or a fetish."

In the episode, Gabrielle is torn between picking a traditional wedding dress and an extravagant dress that’s more in line with her pageant queen past. “I pretty much understand what looks good on me, but now I have a new body,” she says.

“I’m scared that everyone is going to think ‘Oh, she’s doing a pageant.’” Gabrielle ended up picking a beautiful curve-hugging mermaid gown, as seen in a photo on her Instagram.

Say Yes to the Dress’ bridal consultant Shay said on the show that he’s thrilled to have Gabrielle on, adding: “It’s important that transgender women get their fair share as being seen as beautiful and wonderful, like any other woman.”

Gabrielle told People that she wasn’t originally looking for attention, but says she hopes that sharing her story will help the transgender community.

“I just wanted to have an experience, and to show that we as trans people can love, and be loved, in a normal setting, and do things that are not out of the norm,” she says.

“I’m such a fan of the show, and I’ve seen people’s dreams come true, and I wanted my dreams to come true.”
