Don't be intimidated by its prickly skin.
Plus, a serving of pineapple has 50 percent of your daily value of Vitamin C, according to the FDA. But actually dealing with a whole pineapple feels way more complicated than necessary—who wants to get cut by that intimidating prickly skin?
That's why we enlisted the help of Emily Hankey, Whole Foods Market Produce Butcher, to show us how a pro navigates this tricky fruit:
1. Cut off both ends of the fruit. We used an eight-inch slicing knife—you need a blade long enough to handle such a large fruit.
2. From the bottom cut end, Hankey says you may be able to see some brown spots. You can cut those out or cut around them. "Generally speaking, you should cut one centimeter away from any dark, brown, or rotten-looking spots," she says.
3. Stand the fruit upright on one of the cut ends. Then, grip the pineapple and remove the rough skin by slicing down and away from yourself. You'll be making the fruit into a more rectangular shape as you shave off the skin.
4. Once the skin is removed, cut the fruit around the core. The core is a whiter portion in the center of the pineapple—it's a bit tough so not great for eating, says Hankey.
5. Set the core aside and cut up the remaining fruit into slices or chunks.
That's it! Hankey says you can even save the head of the pineapple (the part with the leaves that you cut off at the beginning) for regrowth. Place it in a shallow bowl with about one inch of water and watch it re-sprout, she says. Once the top sprouts new roots, you can plant it in a planter or in your garden to have your very own pineapple plant.
