Weird life experiences of an HR (Ep. 1)

A lot of people talk about the horrible experience of their job but no one has ever talked about what HRs go through, just to employ a newbie in their organization.

Weird life experiences of an HR (Ep. 1)

Today, I will be discussing the different types of Nigerians I engaged with during an interview process for my organization while we were recruiting for the role of a front desk officer.

That Monday morning, one of the shortlisted candidates arrived at about 10:00am even though our agreed time was 9:00am. We didn't choose the time, rather, every shortlisted candidate was given the liberty to choose their preferred time for the interview for their convenience and proper time management.

Upon her arrival, we asked her why she came late, but her response left us all wondering if we were even ready for the interview. “This is Lagos, you cannot expect that people would not come late for interviews,” she said.

I and the rest of the team looked at each other dazed at what we had just heard but we continued with the interview regardless. “Please tell us about you,” I asked.

“My name is Stella Idris, but my friends call me Stella-baby. My favorite food is ogbono and fufu, but I also enjoy it with cold eba especially when the eba has lasted for about two days and a half. I like to go shopping, I like to buy bags, and short dresses,” she said, as she giggled.

Uhmm… I cleared my throat. Stella, we appreciate these details about you but we needed something more professional, like one time that you helped in solving a problem or so. Or how your communication methods…

“That's not a problem at all. Infact, if I get employed as your front desk officer, all the customers that walk in and act like their head is not correct, I will reset it for them.”

“Really?” my colleague Zainab asked.

“Yes o. Don't think that because I am so calm, and I am wearing a blazer and konko shoe, I don't have madness,” she said laughing hysterically.

“Okay, but why do you fit into this role? Why do you think we should employ you?” I asked.

“Because I will make your customers laugh. Once they come in, I will make sure that they will forget their sorrow and relax until Oga is ready to attend to them. Trust me on this. As you are seeing me like this, I'm very funny o,” she said reassuringly.

“That's your convincing reason?” I asked.

“That's not convincing enough?” Stella asked.

“Of course it is, we will get back to you as soon as possible,” Zainab said, stretching her hand to Stella for a handshake.

“Okay, I will be expecting our response, '' she said as she shook hands with Zainab while I nodded in response to her goodbye.

The interview was short, but I knew that even if I sat in front of Netflix to binge-watch a TV show, it wouldn’t have been more interesting than what I had just witnessed.
