When Agbani Darego became the first black Miss World

In 2001, Agbani Darego became the first black Miss World, shooting the Nigerian fashion and lifestyle scene to hitherto unseen heights.

Agbani Darego's emergence as the first black Miss World is probably one of those moments you remember exactly where you were/what you were doing when you heard the news.

Who can forget the utter jubilation that came with the announcement? A black woman and a Nigerian at that emerging Miss World was truly something to remember.

Perhaps what was even more noteworthy of the win was Agbani's attire for the evening. Her custom-made green Mon Amie dress and hair up-do was splashed across magazine covers for months afterwards. Agbani also became the de-facto slang for referring to a very attractive woman.

It was indeed a major milestone for the Nigerian lifestyle/entertainment industry and in honour of this epoch-making moment, we go back in time to that joyous moment in time.
