What it means to be stashed

We once explained here what ghosting means and why it is a terrible, terrible way to end relationships.

Imagine a breakup that involves no form of conversation or communication about the end of the relationship, let alone reasons why the breakup was happening.

A ghoster just quietly disappears, wordlessly fades away from the life of someone they had a thing with.

No calls, no texts and of course, no face-to-face conversation to ‘formally’ end the relationship.

As awful as that sounds, there seems to be a new relationship problem that might be worse.

Enter, stashing.

Confused young man. play When people ghost, they just quietly disappear and wordlessly fade away from the life of someone they had a thing with. (Vanity Fair)

‘Stashing’ is basically when the person you’re dating hides you away from everyone else in their life.

The concept is not that new. Many married men and cheating boyfriends have found ways to hide side-chics away from their families from time immemorial.

The word stashing is however new and it explains how some modern lovers have perfected the skill of keeping you far away from those who really matter in their lives – family, real friends and other close people.

If you’re in a serious relationship and you’ve not met any significant person in your partner’s life, it downplays the seriousness and commitment of the entire relationship.

My relationship with a man who hated oral sex did not end well. play If he's not showing you to people that matter in his life, he could be a stasher, hiding you away from those that could possibly form a great support system for the relationship. (Uptown Magazine)

According to Ellen Scott of Metro UK  who coined the term;

“You’re in a relationship or dating in all other senses, but by refusing to acknowledge your existence publicly, or to other people in their life, the stasher is able to tell themselves that you’re not actually together, so they’re perfectly entitled to treat you poorly.”

And not only is that likely to happen, it could also be a pointer to your unimportant status in his/her life.

For all you know, you could be just one of his five side-chics and she could just be using you, guy, as a rebound relationship.

Stay woke.
