Relationship Talk "My boyfriend tells white lies, I'm afraid it'll get worse"

I really love him and I would really like him to be comfortable enough to tell me anything, no matter how bad it is.

Relationship Talk

Dear Bukky,

I have a boyfriend who has lied to me a few times. The lies are actually not serious things, just little white ones.

But I am worried that it could graduate into serious things that’ll hurt our relationship. We are pretty serious about each other and I suspect that we might end up getting married which is why I am really concerned about this habit of his.

My friends say sometimes men lie because they respect women and they don’t want to hurt us with the truth.

Do you think that is a reasonable excuse for men? And more importantly, how do I get my guy to be as honest with me as possible?

I really love him and I would really like him to be comfortable enough to tell me anything, no matter how bad it is.

I feel that’s what real partners do to each other, what do you think?

Hi, reader

In my opinion, your friends are wrong for trying to convince you into believing that lying men are doing it for your good.

While it may be a common thing [I’m not sure about that, really], I strongly believe it is a wrong thing.

You are right in your belief that partners are meant to be honest with each other in all circumstances and that is the standard you have to live by and encourage your partner to live by, too.

As regards you and your partner, I don’t think you can do much to get him to trust you, that is a decision he has to learn to make on his own.

But I do believe that you could let him know that he can trust you. It is not enough to tell him though, you also need to show him.

How do you treat the little information he entrusts you with? How do you react when he admits his mistakes? All these things go a long way in deciding if he will trust you or not.

A partner who lies isn’t cool, though. So in the end, it could affect your relationship negatively.

You need openness and honesty for a relationship to be fine. These are fundamental traits that can’t be overlooked.

If your partner somehow does not understand the importance of this, then I think maybe he’s not good enough for you.

But then, how important is honesty to you? How well do you practice it, too?

Just some food for thought for you.
