The research was conducted by the University of Toronto-Mississauga in Canada to challenge the notion that the more sex you have the better.
According to the data collected from over 2,400 married couples in the US in 14 years it was reported that their sexual fantasies frequency increased up to once a week.
It was realised that having more sex didn't really show a noticeable benefit.
Although more frequent sex is associated with greater happiness, this link was no longer significant at a frequency of more than once a week.
"Our findings suggest that it's important to maintain an intimate connection with your partner, but you don't need to have sex every day as long as you're maintaining that connection, " lead researcher Dr Amy Muise said.
However, the study didn't say if the sex made couples happier or having a happy relationship led to more sex.
