Is it really boring to be a single person?

I was going through stories on my WhatsApp just moments before I began writing this piece, and while at it, I came upon a text picture by one of my pals who wrote

I kept asking myself, being someone who has stayed away from any romantic relationship for the best part of the past five years, is it really that bad to be single?

Considered all by itself, being single is not boring. Compared to being in a relationship, the answer remains no, and I speak from a place of personal experience, just as many people reading this will relate with.

Being regularly bored and leading a boring life will not automatically change with a partner. For some people, it must be said, being in a relationship might be the catalyst to get involved in some fun activities, to go places and partake in some social activities they'd normally not do alone and that is understandable.

But in a grander context, this cannot be interpreted as an indictment of the single life. There’s no fun thing you do with a partner that can’t be done when you are single. [with an exception to penetrative sex, right?].

Yes, you may have to take your friends or do some things all by yourself as opposed to doing it with the love of your life, but that does not change the fact that you can live your best, fun life when single.

Whether outgoing or a lover of the indoors, everything [ok, almost everything] you need to do to live your best life can be done as a single person.

There is no denying that returning to the single life after experiencing the pleasures and highs of a relationship might come with some withdrawal symptoms. Of course, when you compare life as you know it, especially if the relationship was an adventurous one, you will miss many aspects of it.

You’ll miss the constant availability of someone to listen to you, to pamper you, to accommodate your excesses, buy you food, blow up your phone with cute messages and texts and all the other syrupy things people in relationships do. This does not change the fact, though, that you can still live a life above boredom as a single person.

Being single in itself is not a boring circumstance. What you choose to make of the phase is solely dependent on you. You could be bored brainless while waiting with desperation for a partner to turn it around for you, or you could meet a partner while in a personal pursuit of the best life imaginable.
