A couple decided to skip the extravagance of weddings and do something different for a change.
The groom had proposed to the bride in May 2014 on "The Ellen Degeneres Show". After deciding on how much they wanted to spend for their wedding, Shehzaan said his father had an idea on how they could save that really struck him.
“At some point, my father mentioned that we could consider having a simpler wedding and donating what we budgeted to a respected organization like Aga Khan Foundation,” he said.
The Aga Khan Foundation (AKF), is a charity organisation that invests in schools, infrastructure, hospitals and self-sustaining communities around the world.
Located in Lawrenceville, AKF says it works to break the cycle of poverty by investing in these infrastructures.
The couple who were still engaged at that time, were asked to rethink their decision before making it final.
“What if I regret it? You only get married once, hopefully. But something just felt right,” Zainab said she was doubtful initially.
The couple had a simple wedding ceremony on December 26 , 2015 . They donated all the money tp AKF and even encouraged wedding guests to donate.
“People we didn’t even know came to see how our wedding turned out and another couple was inspired to do the same thing,” Shehzaan Chunara said.
Though Shehzaan and Zainab didn't disclose the amount donated, they said the cash raised will go a long way in helping "impoverished children globally that don’t have clean drinking water. They don’t have health care. They don’t have education."
"Many of us will never experience anything close to this in our lives, but for, Shehzaan & I, we strongly feel to whom much is given, much is expected. So we found a moment in our life which we could give to the thought of others – in this case what would otherwise have been a grand wedding," Zainab said in a video of the couple posted online.
"That internal feeling that you get, that's something that's resounding and stays with you for the rest of your life. That's better than seeing pictures,” Shehzaan Churnara said while encouraging couples thinking of doing the same.
