Drug trafficker weds in the face of death

An Australian drug trafficker wedded his girlfriend yesterday on the Indonesian prison island, where he is set to be executed soon.

A drug trafficker, Andrew Chan, 31, set to face execution soon, got married yesterday to his  Indonesian girlfriend, Febyanti Herewila.

Chan met his future wife many years ago when Herewila, a pastor, began helping inmates in the jail where he was imprisoned.

Chan's brother, Micheal, announced the marriage news  after returning from a visit to Nusakambangan saying, “we’ve had a special day today,” we’ve celebrated with some family and close friends.

Concerning his brother's impeding death, Micheal said, “hopefully, the president will show some compassion, some mercy, so these two young people can carry on with their lives. “It’s in the president’s hands.”

However, President Joko Widodo, despite a diplomatic campaign mounted by Australia to save Chan and fellow Australian Myuran Sukumaran, ringleaders of the so-called “Bali Nine” heroin-smuggling gang facing execution, has vowed there will be no clemency for drug traffickers on death row in Indonesia.

We wish them all the best.
