Getting engaged is simple, but real work lies in planning the wedding.

Weddings can be very expensive – that's nothing new. With all the details involved in planning this one magical day, it can seem impossible to find ways to save money.

But the truth is, you can actually save money while planning your big day. How? Read the following tips to find out:

  1. Reduce the guest list: Invite only your immediate family members and closest friends. If someone feels insulted that they didn't make the cut, express how touched you are that they wanted to celebrate with you, then mention that your budget was limited, that you have large families, etc.

  2. Opt for a weekday wedding: Many couples are keying into the weekday wedding trend. Getting married on a Thursday or Friday will definitely cut down the number of your wedding guests as opposed to a traditional Saturday celebration.

  3. Book an all-inclusive venue: Find a venue that requires little decor. For example, beautiful chandeliers and patterned walls, so there'll be no need to drape them. Also, consider having your ceremony and reception at the same venue to cut down on time and transportation costs.

  4. Wedding dress sales: If you've got time to plan, make sure you hit department store wedding dress sales or designer sample sales, where you can snag last season's dress for a fraction of what the latest style would cost.

  5. Opt for a small wedding party: Another way to cut costs is to narrow down the people in your wedding party. A small bridal party can make a difference - you'll have fewer thank-you gifts to buy and won't have to worry about covering the cost of extra bridesmaid dresses or hair and makeup appointment.

  6. Cut back on photography: If you like a particular photographer that is out of your price range, you can still hire them. Just limit the hours you have them for to make them fit into your budget. Let them capture the important parts of the ceremony, and you can skip other minor aspects of the party.

  7. Get bigger tables: Use bigger but fewer tables, and you'll save on centerpieces. Speaking of centerpieces, use more inexpensive greens than pricey flowers for table decorations. Or skip flowers, and use candles or lanterns.

  8. Handcrafted invitations: These days designing and printing invitations yourself is a snap. And you can use a calligraphy font for envelopes that looks fancy and hand printed.

  9. Limit your live music: For couples who want to incorporate live music into their day, but can't afford to pay for a dance band or hire live musicians to play during the reception party, you can have a DJ or playlist takeover the party. You can also consider musicians who you have heard at your favourite local spots, as opposed to traditional 'wedding' companies, as their prices will often be less, and the style of music will most likely be exactly your taste.

  10. Buy a small cake: Instead of buying an expensive, five-tier cake, order a two-tier cake – you can display it on a large pedestal – and supplement slices with a sheet cake hidden in the kitchen.
