Scientists have discovered how marriage can save us during a difficult time.

A new study from Duke University, published in the Journal of Surgical Research, found that single men are a third more likely to die within two years of surgery than men who put a ring on it. Those who are divorced are twice as likely to die, with a 76 percent higher risk than married men or widowers.

The study examined more than 11,500 adult men who underwent surgery that didn’t involve their hearts, as reported by the Daily Mail. Of them all, 7.7 percent died within two years of being operated on. Why exactly the connection exists between being married and surviving for another two years is still unknown, though. And no such correlation found among women. So the ladies can go on living their lives, literally, without a man.

“This is the first study to demonstrate the protective effect of marriage across a wide variety of surgical procedures,” the Duke researchers said. “... Focused efforts to improve social support for unmarried male patients may improve outcomes.”

In other words, if you're insistent on staying single, put a little more effort into your social circle. Otherwise, the only squad you’ll have will be the other dead bodies surrounding your burial plot.
