We finally got there. It took eight seasons and multiple delays in Essos, but Daenerys Targaryen finally took Kings Landing-and it happened in a way that has made a lot of Game of Thrones fans angry.
The Internet is Not Happy About Last Night's Explosive Game of Thrones
Warning: The following post contains spoilers for Game of Thrones season 8 episode 5. If you don't want to know what happens, stop reading!
After years of meticulously-plotted political intrigue and character growth, the penultimate episode of the entire series reduced the capital of Westeros to rubble, with an enraged Daenerys ignoring the citys surrender and laying waste to thousands of innocent people. In Simpsons parlance, we finally got to the fireworks factory, but many fans felt it was at the cost of characterization, and they laid the blame at the showrunners feet.

d&d: dany kind of forgot about the iron fleet d&d: jon kind of didn't get daenerys is his aunt d&d: cersei kind of forgot she wanted her brothers dead d&d: dany kind of forgot those people are innocent d&d: we kind of forgot how to finish characters' arcs without killing them off - ellie (@odairannies) May 13, 2019
Logistically speaking, people were annoyed by how quickly and conveniently Drogon was able to destroy the scorpion ballistas, which just last week killed Rhaegal and have been teased as a major weapon throughout the season:
I just want D+D to explain how: 1. Cersei was a bigger threat than the Night King when she wasn't even a bigger threat than a handful of Euron's ships. 2. How Dany could defeat a hundred scorpions with ONE dragon, but couldn't save her ships when she had TWO dragons a week ago. - Ms. Genie Lauren, To You. (@MoreAndAgain) May 13, 2019
In fact, Drogon was able to destroy the entire city with remarkable ease, which makes you wonder why Dany spent the last eight years spinning her wheels.
that dragon wasn't doing all that hot shit last week tho - Desus Nice (@desusnice) May 13, 2019
The Golden Company also proved to be more of a gold-plated tin company, folding almost instantly against the Unsullied, leaving one viewer wondering what might have been:
Why did Cersei put so much emphasis on the elephants. What did she want them to do - bolu babalola (@BeeBabs) May 13, 2019
Some points were made about family values.
Lannisters stuck tf together. Tyrion's family treated him like trash but in the end he risked it all to save them. Jon never heard of such a thing in his life. Your whole fam said hey Dany is crazy let that go. Even Bran put the blunt down long enough to agree. Idiot - Brienne's Lemonade Is Going Platinum (@holadamilola) May 13, 2019
Dany going from zero to a hundred on the Mad Queen scale in the space of an episode gave viewers whiplash:
Dany was hinted at as going into madness, but what she did this episode still wasnt earned. I agree with Dany fans on there needing to be more buildup. Other than the kills this episode and a Tarly kill no one cared abt, she didnt rly kill innocents - Revolver Ocelcock (@Ocelcock) May 13, 2019
daenerys for 7 seasons: has never harmed anyone innocent, stopped cultures of rape and violence against women, her priority was always the people daenerys season 8: hears bells of surrender and for some fucking obsurd reason starts killing innocents #GameofThrones - mourning jonerys (@targarcyn) May 13, 2019
despite how upset most of us are with daenerys outcome this season. my heart goes out to emilia clarke. couldnt imagine falling in love with portraying a character for over ten years only to witness them ruin her without being able to do a single thing #GameofThrones pic.twitter.com/VoGBdJvY57 - (@muertres) May 13, 2019
And it turns out, even the actress who plays Dany wasnt especially thrilled with how the big battle went down:
They actually all had something negative to say lol; Gwendolyn complained about how Brienne was reduced to a one night stand for Jamie as a character, Emilia has been hinting with those eyebrows for months, Kit called it disappointing, and Peter was so passive aggressive - Kanye West making Gratatata Noises (@EdwardIrra) May 13, 2019
In short, people werent happy.

Dear D&D, I want the last decade of my life back, thanks. #GameOfThrones - Jenna Guillaume (@JennaGuillaume) May 13, 2019
Of course, theres still one week left, so we dont know how the story ends just yetbut the character of Daenerys is pretty much a write-off at this point. Plenty of people in Game of Thrones have redeemed themselves, but one episode isnt enough to make up for committing war crimes.
