Phil Mickelson Looks Lean on the Beach After Losing 15 Pounds

World champion golfer Phil Mickelson is looking a lot leaner these days. In a family vacation photo posted by his sister Tina this week, Mickelson can be seen showing off his newly slimmed down frame. "FYI, those weird bumps on the side of my stomach weve never seen before, Doc called them obliques and said its nothing to worry about," he joked in response to the tweet.

Mickelson underwent a "hard reset" back in July while he was preparing to enter the British Open, with the intention of getting back to his absolute best. This included a six day fasting period, in which he lived on a special blend of coffee and water. At the end of this reset, he had lost 15 pounds.

"I don't know if it's going to help me play better or not," he said, "but I'm willing to do whatever it takes to try to get my best back."

There is certainly some anecdotal evidence to support the theory that drinking coffee can help you lose weight as part of a calorie-restricted diet. If you cap your calorie intake at 1,500 per day, and eat mainly lean proteins, fruits and vegetables and unrefined grains, then drinking three cups of coffee or more per day could "boost your metabolism and cardiovascular function, while spurring weight loss," according to Dr. Bob Arnot, author of The Coffee Lover's Bible.

Additionally, drinking black brewed coffee can offer health benefits such as reducing inflammation and preventing diseases, as it is rich in antioxidants. And while the coffee-and-water-based diet didn't exactly help Mickelson's performance in the British Open (it marked the continuation of one of the most disappointing seasons of his career), the fact remains that he looks great.
