Nicolas Cage's Dream Car from Gone in 60 Seconds Is Now Up for Auction

It's been nearly two decades since the release of Gone in 60 Seconds, the 2000 remake of a 1974 flick which starred Nicolas Cage and Angelina Jolie . And while that film certainly didn't have quite the same long-lasting cultural impact of a certain other early '00s movie about a gang of car thieves , it did boast an impressive coterie of cars including a 1967 Ford Mustang which will be heading to auction in 2020.

One of the 11 models made for the production will go under the hammer at Mecum's Auction in Kissimmee, Florida in January. The retromodeled vehicle is gray with black stripes, featuring a five-speed manual transmission with a hydraulic clutch. It has just 90 miles on the clock, and is expected to easily fetch a six-figure bid.

In the movie, the car was dubbed "Eleanor" and was highly coveted by Cage's character (the incredulously named Memphis Raines). Memphis had tried to steal Eleanor on multiple occasions prior to the beginning of Gone in 60 Seconds, and finally succeeded in an epic sequence which resulted in a car chase across Los Angeles which this particular model was used to film.

Eleanor's prize feature is the "Go Baby Go!" button on its Hurst shifter, which Memphis uses to outrun a police helicopter: the nitrous oxide system (NOS) boosts the car's output by a staggering 125 horses. And it's real; whomever ends up the proud owner following the auction in January will be able to floor it in style.

Nicknamed the "Dream Car" by the movie's production team, Eleanor has been credited with helping to popularize the automotive trend of retromodding vintage cars, and revived the Mustang as a symbol of classic cool.
